| How to Obtain your Latitude / Longitude Coordinates |
|
Your Latitude and Longitude coordinates are an absolute "MUST HAVE"
before you can use WTS ... at least relative to YOUR exact location. Without your
location coordinates, accurate bearing and distance calculations cannot be made.
Even if you already know your coordinates you might consider double-checking them
using one of the procedures below.
To make things easier, you might want to PRINT these instructions before continuing then refer to your printout as you follow the steps. If you live in the US, and have a ZIP code, two VERY good resources are available to you: Geocode.com's Tele Atlas and the Tiger Map Service, courtesy of the United States Census Bureau. If you live elsewhere, perhaps in Canada or Mexico for example, then Microsoft's MSN "Mappoint" is a viable resource although it's a bit more cumbersome to use. The "Mappoint" method is shown below the Tiger Map Service method below.
GEOCODE.COM'S TELE ATLAS - EASIEST By far, if you live in the U.S. and have a STREET mailing address and ZIP code, Geocode.com is the easiest way to obtain your Latitude and Longitude coordinates via their "Test Drive Eagle" page. Just type in your address and presto! Almost instant coordinates! Click Here to visit Geocode.com. For reference, their URL is:
TIGER MAP SERVICE METHOD - NEXT EASIEST 01. Go to: Tiger Map Service URL: http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer/ 02. Type in your ZIP code, Click SEARCH 03. Once search results appear, click: Browse Tiger [Map] of area. 04. Once a map of your City/Town is displayed, look to the right of the map where "Click on image to:" is shown and check the "Move to New Center" box. 05. Locate your approximate location and click THAT spot on the map. 06. When the new map is drawn, go back to the "Click on image to:" block and check "Zoom in Factor" and use a value of 5 or so. Then place your cursor on the the same spot you clicked on in number 5 above and click to redraw the map. 07. Contiune steps 5 and 6 until you have a close up view of your exact location CENTERED on the map, then scroll down a little and your Latitude/Longitude coordinates will be displayed just below the map. That's it! Record and save your coordinates.
MSN MAPPOINT METHOD - A LITTLE CUMBERSOME BUT WORKS 01. Internet Explorer users ONLY: Start NOTEPAD, WORDPAD or other Text Editor or Word Processor then minimize it to your task bar - you'll use it later in the procedure. Netscape users, you'll need a pencil and paper. 02. Go to: MSN MAPPOINT URL: http://mappoint.msn.com/(gmxkhc5501sx3k45z4ky3lur)/home.aspx 03. In the "Find a Map" window, select your Country then enter as much information as you can about your location and click GET MAP. If you live in a rural area and do NOT have an actual street address, it might be easier to just use your zip code (US) or postal code (Canada / Mexico) then find your exact location based on your knowledge of your local roads/streets, etc. You could also start by clicking the "Place Name" selector then input your Town or City's name and click GET MAP. 04. Once the initial map has been displayed and you're in the general area of your location, just click on the map to recenter and use the magnify buttons to the left to ZOOM in. Also note that at the upper left portion of the map are three buttons to the right of "Map Size". They control the size of the displayed map on your screen; Small, Medium or Large. I suggest clicking the MEDIUM display button. Continue to ZOOM in until you're at the MAXIMUM magnification with your EXACT location centered on the displayed map. (or as close as you can determine it) 05. Now comes the "fun" part. Your coordinates are NOT directly visible but they are available if you know WHERE to look. Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers handle things a little differently so, if you're using MS Internet Explorer, go to step 7. If you're using Netscape, go to the next step, 6. 6. Get your Cordinates - FOR NETSCAPE USERS: RIGHT-CLICK on the displayed map then click PROPERTIES. A new window will pop up titled "Element Properties". At the bottom is a section titled: Image Properties" that shows a VERY LONG URL. Buried in that URL are your coordinates. You may need to move the window around to see everything. The extreme RIGHT side of the URL contains your Latitude and Longitude values. Start at the right hand side and reading to the left, find the characters: "&C=". Immediately to the right of the equals sign is your Latitude in Decimal Degrees. Going further to the right, immediately folowing the "%2c" is your Longitude. Copy these vales and return to WTS so you can update your configuration. (Please round the numbers to six (6) places to the right of the decimal point). Go to Step #8. 7. Get your Cordinates - FOR INTERNET EXPLORER USERS: RIGHT-CLICK on the displayed map then click PROPERTIES. A new window will pop up titled "Properties". At the very top you'll see a "General" tab showing what looks like a bunch of gibberish. Burried in that string of characters are your coordinates. Unfortunately, you can't resize the "Properties" window to expose the whole string of characters so we'll use your previously opened NOTEPAD, etc. to COPY and PASTE the needed information. Place your mouse cursor anywhere on that string of "gibberish" then RIGHT-CLICK it. On the pop-up menu that appears, select (click) "Select All" to highlight it. Then press Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Insert to copy the string to your clipboard. Next, maximize NOTEPAD (or whichever editor you previously opened) and click EDIT, PASTE from your editor's menu. The entire string of gibberish should now be visible, Now, the procedure is the same as for Netscape, Starting at the right side of the string of characters, and reading back to the left, find the characters: "&C=". Immediately to the right of the equals sign, is your Latitude in Decimal Degrees. Going further to the right, immediately folowing the "%2c" is your Longitude. Copy these vales and return to WTS so you can update your configuration. (Please round the numbers to six (6) places to the right of the decimal point) 8. PHEW! That's It! - You're done here. |
