DX REPORTING JARGON
Some (but by no means all!) abbreviations used in
DX reports

AM -- Amplitude Modulation, often used to denote AM band -- i.e.
530-1700 kHz

ant -- antenna

ad-string -- a series of advertisements

BCB -- Broadcast Band (530-1700 kHz)

cw -- continuous wave (as in morse code signals)

C&W -- country and western (music)
-
DX -- a signal from a great distance
-
DXO -- DX Ontario (ODXA's monthly publication)

EZL -- easy listening music
-
fmt -- format
-
GMT -- Greenwhich Mean Time (see UTC)

<g> -- denotes a grin and <G> -- denotes a big
grin
-
HAS -- Highway Advisory Service radio (see also TIS)

het -- heterodyne: sound from signals beating against each other
such as the 1000 Hz sound caused to 1520 kHz by Saudi Arabia on 1521

hi -- denotes a laugh
-
ID -- identification
-
IRC -- International Reply Coupon (world-wide postal note)

IRCA -- International Radio Club of America
-
IS -- interval signal
-
kHz -- kiloHerz (1000 Herz): WMVPChicago broadcasts on 1000 kHz

mHz -- (1000000 Herz): WMVP Chicago broadcasts on 1 mHz
-
kc -- Kilocycles: old stuff -- now called kiloHerz
-
LAm -- Latin America or a Latin American station
-
LW -- Long Wave band (say from about 100-500 kHz or so)

m -- metre(s), or meter
-
mb -- metre band
-
mc -- Megacycles: also old stuff -- now called megaHerz

NA -- national anthemn

NAm -- North America or a North american station

NRC -- National Radio Club
-
MW -- Mediumw Wave alternate way of describing AM or BCB

ODXA -- Ontario DX Association

pgm -- program

pgm fmt -- program format

PSA -- public service announcement

QRM -- interference (from another station)

QRN -- noise (from various sources)

QSL -- a verification (hopefully a full-data card) of reception

RTTY -- radio teletype

RTV -- Radio Television

RDTV -- Radiodiffusion Television (as in Radiodiffusion Television
Algerienne)

stn -- station

SSB -- single sideband

SW -- Short Wave

SWBCB -- Short Wave Broadcast Bands (as in 49, 41, 31, 25, etc.
metre bands on Short Wave)

TA -- Trans Atalntic (signal)

TC (or T/C) -- time check

TIS -- Travel Information Station or Service (see also HAR)

TP -- Trans Pacific (signal)

UTC -- Universal Coordinated Time (or Universal Time Coordinates)
same as GMT

Unid -- unidentified stations (as in Unid LAm)

u/ -- under: as in u/WMVP (under WMVP)

v -- variable (as in variable frequency)

vs -- verification signer (on a QSL)
