How to Remove Barcodes, Printing and Labels from PVC

If you use PVC pipe and fittings obtained from your local hardware store or home improvement center, chances are they will have barcode and/or other identification marks printed on them. Here are some tips on how to easily remove those marks for a nicer looking loop frame.

For Markings directly PRINTED on the PVC

I've tried just about every solvent there is but one stands out as being the fastest and easiest: ACETONE. It's cheap and available at most hardware or home improvement centers in pints, quarts and gallons.

CAUTION!  CAUTION!  CAUTION!

ACETONE is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, a BREATHING HAZARD and SKIN IRRITANT! BE SURE to ONLY USE IT OUTSIDE and keep your face upwind so the vapors will blow AWAY from you. Also, WEAR RUBBER GLOVES when using. (the thick kind you use in the kitchen for washing dishes have worked fine for me)

Just put a little Acetone on a small cloth (piece of towel works great) then rub over the printing. The printing ink will dissolve almost instantly leaving a nice clean piece of PVC.

For Labels PASTED on the PVC

Acetone will also work here but a less volatile method is to just smear a little RUBBER CEMENT over the label and "work" it in with your fingers (rubber gloves should be used here as well). Just rub a little and you should be able to peel the label away. Remember that Rubber Cement is also flammable so use caution. Finger nail Polish Remover can also be used at times - it's also flammable, a breathing hazard and skin irritant.

Closing Tip: I've found it easier to clean the PVC before assembling the loop frame.
